Thirty years ago the 2-1B action figure didn’t present a lot of game for me. That character in the Empire Strikes Back only had one or two spoken lines and his main gig was poking at dead Tauntauns and a near-dead Luke Skywalker. Kind of horrifying actually.

Now (much as I’ve done with all 2nd-, 3rd- and 4th-string action figures) I’ve forgiven 2-1B all shortcomings and granted him unconditional rad toy status. His feats of medical derring-do are celebrated here in one of my personal favorite pics to date. Sock it to ’em One-bee!

This is the last post for 2009. Thanks to everyone for making this a really fun first year.

From the very first, the vintage 12-back C-3PO was an action figure that needed no improvement. Lavish gold paint, a near-perfect sculpt… Kenner hooked up the kids in ’78 for real.

Ready to roll on stop motion animating scene 323 for the Star Wars Uncut project. This one looks to be tougher than the first. And I’ll be straight up with you, that one was a bitch.

The vintage Luke Skywalker Jedi Knight figure has a cape that’s leaves a little something to be desired. With Luke’s face and body drowning in its excess, it’s more like a tent than anything else. So hiding the cape was my motive for going with such restrained lighting on this shot. I have to say I dig the results.

Of course we know every detail concerning R2-D2’s royal zapping by a stealth band of Jawas. But what indignities did C-3PO suffer during his arrest? Whatever the case, it’s unlikely there was much struggle.
